Whole-pod edamame and shelled kernels are different buying programs. The RFQ should name the format first, then describe calibration, colour, maturity, defects, cooking performance and packaging.
For Japan, the final importer should confirm current destination requirements and label content for the selected product. This guide focuses on the commercial information needed to begin product matching, not on replacing regulatory review.
1. Start with format and end use
For whole pods, define pod count or calibration, acceptable one-bean pods, colour, fibre, damage and foreign material. For shelled kernels, define kernel size, whole-piece expectations, skin condition, colour and acceptable breakage.
State whether the product is intended for retail, foodservice, snack service or manufacturing. The sample evaluation and pack design should reflect how the product will actually be prepared and presented.
2. Describe sensory and frozen condition
Explain the desired sweetness, tenderness and colour after the buyer's intended heating method. Ask for a sample and record the preparation method used during evaluation so results are repeatable.
Quick-frozen product should remain in the defined frozen condition through storage and distribution. Codex identifies rapid freezing and maintenance at -18°C or colder as central elements of the quick-frozen vegetable standard.[1]
3. Complete the commercial brief
Include pack weight, inner and outer materials, label language, case configuration, expected volume, destination port and timing. For private label, identify artwork ownership and approval steps.
Request only documentation relevant to the actual product and selected manufacturing partner. Certification names without scope, site and validity information are not enough for qualification.
